2. What we offer
Bookshop 101 is an online platform for serialized fiction. Writers publish books chapter by chapter, and readers read them on the site. The first chapter of every book is free. After that, readers can buy access to individual chapters, or to the rest of a book at a discounted “binge-read” price.
Everything we sell is digital reading access on the Bookshop 101 website. We don’t sell or ship physical goods.
3. Accounts
- You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or make a purchase.
- Give us accurate details, keep your login private and tell us straight away if you think someone else has access to your account. You are responsible for activity on your account.
- You can browse and read free first chapters without an account.
4. Prices and payment
- All prices are shown in South African Rand (ZAR) and include VAT where VAT applies. The total is shown before you pay.
- The merchant outlet country is South Africa and the transaction currency is ZAR.
- Payments are processed by our third-party payment provider on its secure payment page, over an encrypted (TLS) connection. Our payment provider is PCI DSS compliant. We never see or store your full card details. Your customer details are stored separately from your card details.
- We accept the payment methods shown on the checkout page (for example debit and credit cards, and other methods our payment provider supports).
- Purchases appear on your card statement as “Bookshop 101” (or a close variation, sometimes with our payment provider’s name).
- A purchase is complete when our payment provider confirms the payment. You agree to the order total by confirming payment on the checkout page.
- We may change prices from time to time. Changes never affect purchases you have already made.
5. Delivery, cancellations and refunds
Access is delivered digitally and immediately after payment is confirmed. Our Refund, Cancellation & Delivery Policy explains how delivery works, when you can cancel and how to request a refund.
6. What you get when you buy
A purchase gives you a personal, non-transferable licence to read that chapter or book on Bookshop 101. You may not copy, share, resell or republish it. Purchased chapters stay available to you even if the writer later unpublishes the book. If that happens, we’ll also give you the rest of the book free of charge, so you’re never left mid-story. This doesn’t apply if we have to remove a book for legal reasons (in which case see our refund policy).
7. Publishing on Bookshop 101
- Arrangements between Bookshop 101 and each writer are set out in a separate agreement with that writer.
- You keep the copyright in your work. You give us a non-exclusive licence to host, display, price, promote and sell reading access to it on Bookshop 101 for as long as it stays on the site.
- You confirm the work is yours (or you have the rights to publish it) and that publishing it here doesn’t breach anyone else’s rights or any agreement you’ve made.
- You can unpublish your book at any time. Readers who already bought any of its chapters keep access to them and also receive the rest of the book free of charge.
- We may decline or remove any work that breaks these terms or the law.
8. Content rules
Bookshop 101 is a general-audience bookshop. You may not publish or share anything that:
- is sexually explicit or pornographic;
- infringes anyone’s copyright or other rights;
- promotes violence, hatred or serious harm, harasses anyone, or is otherwise illegal in South Africa.
Please don’t try to hack, scrape or interfere with the site, or get around the checkout. We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules.
9. Availability and liability
Anita Shapiro t/a Bookshop 101 takes responsibility for all aspects of transactions on this website, including the sale of reading access, customer service and support, dispute resolution and delivery.
We work to keep the site available and accurate, but we can’t promise it will always be uninterrupted or error-free. Writers are responsible for the content of their books. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 or the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 that cannot legally be excluded.
10. Privacy
We handle personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA), as explained in our Privacy Policy.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we’ll give reasonable notice on the site or by email before it takes effect. The version in force when you make a purchase applies to that purchase.
12. Complaints, governing law and notices
If you have a complaint, contact us at hello@bookshop101.co.za or WhatsApp +27 83 448 1925. We aim to respond within 5 business days. These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and South African courts have jurisdiction. We choose 22 Leeuwenhof Crescent, Higgovale, Cape Town, 8001 as our domicilium citandi et executandi (address for legal notices and service of legal documents) for all purposes under these terms.
